Structured Doctoral Training
Doctoral studies and a doctorate are a prerequisite and initial step for a career in science. They serve as proof of an ability to perform particularly advanced scientific work. Thus, the Faculty is particularly committed to providing excellent conditions for doctoral studies, under which doctoral candidates can optimally develop.
Dissertation Success Program
In the future, students studying medicine or dentistry with a particular interest in scientific problems will have the possibility of completing their doctorate through the dissertation success program.
Doctoral candidates may continue to write medical disserations outside of the program. However, with the introduction of a structure quality management program, which includes, for example, a compulsory supervision agreement and advising from a doctoral coordinator, the quality of medical dissertations will be consistently improved.
MD/PhD Program
Doctors, who are particularly interested in science and have already acquired a Dr. med. or Dr. med. dent degree, are eligible to participate in the MD/PhD program. This is three-year postgraduate training program that was established together by the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Mathematics, Computer Science, and Natural Sciences (Faculty 1). At the end of the program, participants who successfully pass are awarded a Dr. rer. nat. by Faculty 1 or Dr. rer. medic. by the Faculty of Medicine.
Biomedical Graduate School – BMGS
The Biomedical Graduate School or BMGS, founded in 2017, is devoted to the concerns of natural scientists completing their doctorate at the Faculty of Medicine. The BMGS requires that a doctoral candidate is supervised by at least three experienced scientists over the course of the doctoral studies.
Participants also regularly partake in seminars, workshops, and training days offered by the BMGS and document these activities. An internal "PhD club" provides an opportunity for participants to discuss their projects and beyong and to network with one another.
