Recommendations for authorship
The Faculty Council has updated the Recommendations for authorship in publications.
Habilitation serves as a formal confirmation of one's ability to independently and responsibly conduct research and teach in a scientific subject.
By completing the habilitation process, an individual can acquire the right to teach (venia legendi) in a specific subject and the right to use the title Privatdozentin or Privatdozent.
Excerpts from the Habilitation Regulation
(Details about the following points are fixed in the current Habilitation regulation.)
The applicant submits the application for admission to habilitation to the dean of the Faculty of Medicine. The application must contain the exact information for the subject, in which the habilitation and possible venia legendi will be sought.
The Habilitation Board determines whether or not to begin the habilitation process. The board includes:
- the dean
- the dean of academics
- four members selected from the Habilitation Committee from among professors within the Group of University and a maximum of four substitutes
Habilitation is granted once an applicant has written a paper in accordance with § 4 Par. 1 No. 12, given a course related to a course of study, and given a scientific talk with a discussion.
The Habilitation Committee determines whether habilitation is granted. It includes:
- members from the professors within the Group of University Professors of the Faculty,
- retired professors
- all members of the Faculty with habilitation
- all members of the Faculty Council
The members from the professors within the Group of University Professors, who are members or deputy members of the Faculty Council, possess voting rights. The dean of the Faculty of Medicine serves as the chair of the Habilitation Committee and also possesses voting rights. He or she is represented by the vice-dean in case of absence.
Class Related to a Course of Study
The applicant must give a class related to a course of study on one of the topics included in the requested venia legendi. The Habilitation Committee must provide at least one reporter for this class.
After agreeing on a date with the candidate, the dean announces the date for the class. The class must be held before the scientific presentation and may not be longer than 45 minutes. It is open to the public and must be publically announced.
Scientific Presentation with Discussion and Course Related to a Course of Study
After accepting the habilitation paper, the Habilitation Committee selects a topic for the scientific presentation. This topic is selected from among three topics proposed by the applicant, which must be independent from the Habilitation paper and each other.
Habilitation and Ability to Teach
Using the habilitation paper, the scientific presentation with discussion, and the course, the Habilitation Committee decides whether to grant habilitation to the applicant in a specific subject.
After successfully completing the habilitation process, the applicant's ability to teach is confirmed. This allows the applicant to include "habilitatus" when using their doctor title – Dr. habil. The applicant ceases to use "habilitatus" once they have acquire the right to use the title "Privatdozentin“ or "Privatdozent."
License to Teach
The Habilitation Committee decides whether to grant the right to teach or venia legendi to the individual upon request. By acquiring the right to teach, the individual has the right to use the title Privatdozentin or Privatdozent. The right to teach is awarded by handing out the corresponding certificate.
Individuals are expected to hold a public, inaugural lecture – during a celebration – on a topic agreed upon with the dean in the same semester as they acquire the right to teach.
The dean invites the rector, deans of other faculties, members of the Habilitation Committee, and other interested individuals to attend the lecture. The topic of the lecture is included in the invitation.
