History

In 1966, the RWTH Faculty of Medicine was founded as the last of the present nine faculties at RWTH. During its initial years and even after its move to the current university hospital in 1985, focus was placed on issues in patient care.

This only changed in the 1990s when the new building offered the perfect conditions to combine research, teaching, and patient care.

However, it was only after a visit from the German Council of Science and Humanities in 1999 that there was a change in course and consideration for the unique characteristic a faculty of medicine at a technical university possesses.

This process was supported by a generation change among the professors between 2005 and 2010. Innovative, research projects, successful medical training nationwide, and patient care at the highest level set the faculty apart from other institutions.
