German language skills

Keep in mind: you will be in contact with many German speaking patients, you will be involved in the clinical everyday routine, and in order to get the most out of this experience, we strongly recommend you a good command of German, starting with B1 or B2 (CEFR levels). Insufficient command of German might be a reason for refusing your application.

Health records and mandatory examination upon arrival

Students, who have been accepted to study a semester or a year at our Faculty of Medicine or to complete a clerkship at our University Hospital, must fulfill a series of requirements. Please read the following information very carefully.

Students will be physically examined in Aachen before they start with their proposed academic or clinical program. Only if the results are satisfactory the student will be able to start with their proposed academic program. After this examination, you will receive a letter from our university physician, stating you are in good health according to our requirements and able to start your training. Please bring this letter prior to the start of your program to our student exchange coordinator, Eliana Lemos.

Accepted students have to make sure they have all needed vaccinations prior to arrival in Aachen! Otherwise they might have to wait (according to the vaccination schedule) and postpone the start of the clerkship/study program.

Students will need their student registration number (if enrolled at RWTH Aachen University) or a certificate for the examination (short term staying period) and following records (records shouldn’t be older than three months):

Certificate for three vaccinations against Hepatitis B Hepatitis B
Titer (Anti HBs-Antibodies) more than 100 Anti HBc-Antibodies
Hepatitis C
(HCV-Antibodies) negative Hemogram, Liver enzymes (SGOT, SGPT, GGT), Blood glucose, ESR, Urinalysis
Tuberculosis: Tuberculin Skin Test, if it is positive, you need to show an chest-x-ray or a negative Interferon-Gamma release assay (IGRA)

Examination hours (no appointment needed):
Monday - Friday: 8 am - 12 am

General opening hours:
Monday - Thursday: 7:30 am – – 4 pm
Friday: 7:30 am - 3:50 pm

Note: if results for time-consuming tests are missing, like TB test, it will take more working days to have these results. Please bear in mind, the more complete your health records are, the sooner you will be allowed to start your practical training. If you have all the results listed above, you might even get the permission the same day.

As you can see, you need a few working days to complete all these formalities. If you look forward to starting your program on time, make sure to arrive in Aachen at least 3-4 working days in advance!

Dress code in the clinic

In our university hospital we will provide you with lab coats (and white trousers) to wear during your rotations.

The office Magazin will provide you with an electronic badge, necessary to identify yourself in the hospital, and also to have access to the lab coats and white trousers.

Deposit for electronic student badge

  • 20 euros (for incoming exchange students staying for a short period, no enrollment at RWTH university)
  • 60 euros (for incoming exchange students enrolled at RWTH university)

The reimbursement of this deposit is conditioned to the return of all lab coats and white trousers, return of the electronic badge and the original receipt of the deposit.

Don’t forget to bring your own white shoes as part of the dress code!

Dress code in the OR

In the OR you will wear green scrubs and green trousers, which are available in the OR changing room. Access to the OR changing room with electronic student badge only!
