Course Content
The program contains three semesters of lectures, seminars, excercises and practical courses, eight weeks of internship in full time and a final at least four months up to six-months period for the Master's thesis. After each of the three semesters students are assessed with written or oral exams. The program has a modular design and is divided into mandatory modules, mandatory elective and optional modules.
During the first and second semester, mandatory modules in
- Natural Sciences (e.g. Chemistry/Biochemistry, Medical Biology),
- Engineering (e.g. Control and Electrical Engineering, Mechanics/Biomechanics/Fluid Mechanics) and
- Medicine (e.g. Anatomy/Physiology)
create the ideal basis for the next semester.
The third semester consists of specialized modules such as
- Image Processing and Handling
- Image guided Therapy/Molecular Imaging
- Artificial Organs I
- Artificial Organs II
- Cell Culture and Tissue Engineering
- Systems Biology
The above mentioned modules cover in detail the main areas of research and development at RWTH Aachen University. As part of the program, students should also complete a full time eight-week internship after the second semester at a Biomedical Engineering related organisation ( a company, university, or research institute).
The fourth semester consists of the Master's thesis.
The curriculum and course content are structured in accordance with the ECTS (European Credit Transfer System).
