There is typically a lot of frustration when beginning medical studies. Instead of doing clinicals, students first learn the basics. Instead of practice, theory: anatomy, biochemistry, and physiology. The enthusiasm for studies and original fascination for a medical career often fall by the wayside. Since 2003, we have chosen a different path in Aachen: we have introduced a "Modellstudiengang Medizin" (Model degree program of medicine), in which we systematically link pre-clinical studies with clinical right from the beginning. Subjects are not longer separately taught, but rather together and centered around organs. The welcome side effect: not only do students have more fun, but so do the lecturers! Regularly scheduled surveys prove that the satisfaction among students and lecturers with the model course of study is equally high and increasing.

The Faculty of Medicine is among the Top German Medical Faculties

Our graduates' exam results confirm that the model course of study is the right approach. The exam results are much better since the model course of study has existed. Aachen has unwaveringly remained among the top German medicial faculties for the past few years. This is evident in the results from the IMPP for the written Staatsexamen. Most recently, as of Fall 2012, the Aachen students were in second place throughout the country!

Best Possible Study Conditions

The "Modellstudiengang Medizin" (Model degree program of medicine) raised attention throughout the country and received a few renowned awards, such as the 2009 Hartmannbund Education Award. This has reinforced our aspiration to offer our students the best possible study conditions. An aspiration, by which we measure ourselves and on which we constantly work.

The faculty also provides generous resources, such as the class cohort coordinators, full-time coordinators, who guarantee intensive academic advising and mentoring for students as well as the efficient organization of courses, or the Audio Visual Media Center, that offers comprehensive materials for e-learning among other things. Our portfolio is rounded out by the skills lab AIXTRA, previously financed by tuition fees, our training center for practical medical skills with its own space for small classes.

Above all: we consistently work on the futher development of our curriculum so that we can offer our students innovative and exciting medical studies even in ten years!
